Obtaining Eternal Inner Peace through the Magic of Meditation

Achieve Limitless Success, Happiness and Gratitude

Zero BS on taking Control of your Life. No spam.

We’ve discussed how to slow down in today’s busy world through recognizing your thinking patterns and implementing basic breathing exercises at times when you’re overwhelmed.

In addition, we’ve dug into the impact of reflecting and how you can learn to sit back inside of your mind and dissociate from “being” your thoughts. How you can teach yourself to simply watch and observe every thought that pops up as they come and go, without judgement. And how through this awareness, you can then extract subconscious thoughts from within and connect important and sometimes life discovering dots together.

Today I wanted to focus attention on the practice of meditation, which is another unbelievable tool that can be applied to obtain a deep sense of inner peace, awareness and gratitude. It offers a wide array of health benefits and can truly help slow you down in every sense of the meaning, especially when you feel like you’re going 100 miles an hour on all cylinders.

Through meditation you can achieve a state of mindfulness where you’re fully aware and immersed within the present moment. Through diligent practice, during this unique and incredible moment in time (it could last for only a split second) your thoughts magically (and temporarily, of course) pause.

You become so focused on the act of meditating that your thought machine quietly shuts down and takes a much needed break.

Now let me ask you a few questions:

When’s the last time you weren’t in a rush?

When’s the last time you intentionally went an hour without picking up your phone during the day?

The hidden human superpower in this day and age is being AWARE.

Being aware of your thoughts and learning how to control them.

Being aware that you feel rushed and in a hurry to speed up, and gaining the ability to instantly slow down at a moments notice.

Being aware that you’ve spent over 5 unproductive hours on your phone in one day, while picking it up over 300 times throughout that span of time, and figuring out a way to take a step back and focus on the present.

This sense of life altering awareness can be achieved through meditation.

F the BS: It’s time to learn to meditate so that you can harness the power of awareness

Obvious Disclaimer: I’m not a meditation expert. My insights below are from my research, findings and experiences through meditating. There’s no one size fits all approach here. Do what makes you feel most comfortable and focused.

When meditating, you want to make sure you perform the practice in a very relaxing and calm environment. Some say to do it in a place where you only use this specific area for the sole purpose of meditation. (I enjoy meditating in the morning, but you can realistically do it whenever you have some down time to relax and focus).

Ideally, you want to either

-sit in a comfortable chair ensuring you have proper posture
-sit on the floor with your legs crossed with proper posture
-lay completely down with your arms and shoulders relaxed (I prefer this option, especially for those with back pain).

In terms of the style of meditation, below are three different types that I’ve used in the past and still use today (apparently there’s over 20 different types to choose from!).

Guided Meditation

These days there’s a ton of apps that offer guided meditation. This is when a person is speaking to you and takes you through the journey, hence guided.

If you’re brand new to meditating, this is probably going to be your best bet initially as someone’s voice will be with you every step of the way to bring you into a relaxed state so that you can focus on the practice.

Focused Attention Meditation

This is simply the act of focusing on something specific throughout your practice, such as your breath. Fully observing your body and what it does every time you inhale and exhale. It’s good to choose a word to say each time you inhale as well as exhale to help you prolong your focus.

Passage Meditation

I learned this incredible practice from Eknath Easwaran, an amazing indian spiritual teacher. He wrote books that I highly recommend reading such as Passage Meditation, Take Your Time and the Mantram Handbook.

Passage meditation is a unique form where you initially memorize an inspirational passage (ideally one written from some of the world’s great spiritual traditions). You then slowly read the passage word for word over and over again, without thinking into the meaning of the words.

This form of meditation is by far my favorite, but it’s also the most difficult of the three. By focusing on a passage filled with positivity, you essentially become what you meditate on.

To wrap it up…

Meditation is NOT easy. It will take you a LONG time to be able to slow down your thoughts and fully focus on the present moment throughout your practice.

The GOOD thing is that if you stick with it, it will offer you a lifetime of peace, happiness and gratitude.

Just remember: Repeatedly returning is the key. If you find yourself getting distracted, recognize it, don’t judge it and simply return to the practice.

“A calm mind releases the most precious capacity a human being can have: the capacity to turn anger into compassion, fear into fearlessness, and hatred into love.” – Eknath Easwaran

Learning to Solve Problems through the Cultivation of Patience

Achieve Limitless Success, Happiness and Gratitude

Zero BS on taking Control of your Life. No spam.

Life is like a board game. Each time you roll the dice and advance forward you land on a new set of problems. In order to proceed to the next step (to a new batch of issues and concerns), you must first learn how to properly deal with what’s thrown at you so that you can progress in the most effective manner to ultimately excel at this game we call life.

It’s conclusive that humans want happiness, love and fulfillment (at least most of the time). Think of these as qualities that you can achieve for a lifetime, once you learn how to win at the board game of life.

The question is, how can you really reap the benefits of these attributes and harness them for as long as you’re on this planet? Or better yet, how can you learn to effectively solve problems in order to eternally access them?

Enter: Patience.

We always hear the saying “Patience is a virtue”, but do you ever stop to really soak in the meaning of the statement?

By definition, patience is “the capacity to accept or tolerate delay, trouble, or suffering without getting angry or upset.”

Through various books, I’ve discovered (which might come as totally obvious to some) that the key to a well-rounded life boils down to your level of patience.

If your patience tank is always on low, you’re most likely a person who gets upset and offended easily, jumping back and forth from positive emotion to negative emotion solely based on all the external factors that come into your existence. Simply put, you’re currently sitting in last place in the board game metaphor.

On the other hand, if you’ve got a full tank of patience you’re typically someone who is calm and composed, ready to take on anything that’s thrown at you with fortitude. In other words, you’re leading the way in the game of life.

Regardless of how much money you possess, your status personally amongst friends or professionally amongst colleagues, even how attractive you may be, if you lack patience you lack the true meaning and sense of what life is supposed to be about.

F the BS: It’s time to learn how to solve your problems by becoming more patient

Now that we know (or have known) that life is always going to throw obstacles at us, everyone can learn to add a few more drops of patience into their daily dose of life. So let’s drill down a few different ways to rewire our minds into gaining more of this one of a kind virtue.

-Slow down your thinking – This is one we’ve discussed in the past. If you can learn to live life on an even keel (through meditation, breathing, reflecting, etc) you’ll be able to control whatever comes at you with confidence and determination, preventing it from affecting your mental state of mind.

-Realize the impermanence of life itself – Life is short. Shit can pop off at any minute. Think about how unimportant whatever it is you’re about to let negatively affect you and realize how insignificant it is in the grand scheme of things.

-Avoid the issue entirely – Most problems experienced are recurring, if not on a daily basis, then enough times throughout life that one can learn to pinpoint them as they are about to occur or even better, right before they present themselves. Really think about this one, and the next time a dilemma is slowly creeping into your existence, take notice of it, stay calm, prevent your emotions from escalating (maybe even take a few deep breaths) and shoot it down with dignity.

-Be compassionate – If your potential problem involves someone else, try to put their feelings and point of view first. Is it really their fault? Even if it is, are they worth disturbing your immediate quality of life?

-Appreciate your dislikes – Most of the time problems and dislikes are interchangeable, but what if you took a new approach to your dislikes and looked at them in a positive light? Can you give them attention and focus and learn to appreciate them and maybe even be grateful for them as they are?

-Use a mantra(m) – Each time emotions are heightened, repeat a phrase or word inside of your head to distract you from the situation at hand until you have a clear mind to approach the problem in a calmer state.

To wrap things up…

It’s pretty simple. If you can acquire more of the skill called patience you can live a better quality of life.

Regardless if you’re completely blindsided by a problem or can prepare and anticipate one coming, the objective is to learn to not allow yourself to blow them out of proportion. Don’t let your emotions and moods be dictated by the external factors that make up your problems.

The next time you’re presented with one of life’s challenges, try to be a little more patient and see what happens. Who knows, maybe you’ll end up winning at the game of life 🙂

How to Increase Productivity while Doing LESS

Achieve Limitless Success, Happiness and Gratitude

Zero BS on taking Control of your Life. No spam.

Whether you own a successful business, are just starting out and trying to figure how to navigate the seas of the business world, or are simply looking to take your professional career to the next level, increasing your productivity while working less is something that anyone can find extremely beneficial in life.

One of my favorite books of all time is the 4 Hour Work Week, written by Tim Ferris (someone I refer to throughout my posts often).

His book has really helped rewire my mindset both professionally and personally. It’s crazy to think of how things would’ve turned out (as well as how trivial my thinking was looking back at it), had I not come across this book and immediately implement his innovative concepts into my life.

A specific seed that Tim planted into my mind is the difference between being effective and being efficient.

A fair assumption amongst the masses is that working efficiently is key to success. That by doing tasks swiftly, you’re completing work that must be done.

The truth is, efficiency isn’t really optimal.

It’s possible that you can do (and have been doing) unimportant tasks efficiently.

While these tasks may be necessary to be completed, if they aren’t the most important tasks that must be done then you’re not using your time effectively.

F the BS: It’s time to work EFFECTIVELY, not EFFICIENTLY.

The Pareto Principle (sometimes called the 80/20 rule) is a concept that you may have heard of before. It states that for many events, roughly 80% of the effects come from 20% of the causes.

This means that 80% of your productivity comes from only 20% of your time put in (when you’re being effective), while 20% of your productivity comes from spending 80% of your time (when you may be working efficiently, but not effectively).

Think for a moment about all of the tasks that you may have to do, and instead of trying to go after all of them at once try to make it a new habit to consider the questions below first.

-By doing this specific task, am I being productive with my time or just being “active”?
-Is it possible to shorten my work time and limit the number of tasks that I do to only 1-2 super important tasks?
-By doing these 1 or 2 highly critical tasks, can I be satisfied with how my day went?

By being selective of what we do (which it’s ideal to get these done during the morning hours), we allow ourselves to work less while increasing our productivity and effectiveness.

Simply being active and busy is a form of laziness. For the other 80% of time that would be spent achieving 20% of productivity, learn to accept that you cannot and should not do it all.

Hire an employee, sub-contractor, virtual assistant, etc. Delegate these tedious tasks to someone else.

These less important tasks are distractions that can interrupt, prevent and limit you from ultimately accomplishing your goals (just like scrolling through your social media feed can be a waste of your personal down time, versus spending those hours being productive by reading books, listening to podcasts and watching documentaries to help better yourself personally and professionally).

Stop multitasking and trying to juggle between important and unimportant tasks. Get your shit together, and personally focus on ONLY what’s going to move the needle the most.

Learn to be EFFECTIVE with your time so that you can get to where you want to be sooner rather than later, or potentially never!

“Nothing is less productive than to make more efficient what should not be done at all.” ~ Peter Drucker

How to Eliminate the Emotion of Fear and Take What’s Rightfully Yours

Achieve Limitless Success, Happiness and Gratitude

Zero BS on taking Control of your Life. No spam.

It’s normal to want to feel a sense of accomplishment throughout life. To want to succeed and be proud, to be able to tell your children and grandchildren of your achievements regardless of how big or small.

While there’s an overwhelmingly large percentage of people who feel this way, the majority of them never actually do what it takes to reach these incredibly satisfying heights.

More likely than not, that’s because of fear.

Fear has been a dream and goal killer since the beginning of time.

It’s pretty much the main cause that’s prevented individuals from reaching their true potential, or even just a quarter of it.

People are so afraid of the idea of fear that they try to avoid it at all costs.

Fear is defined as an unpleasant emotion caused by the belief that someone or something is dangerous, likely to cause pain, or a threat.

According to verywellmind.com, it can be divided into two different types of responses, biochemical and emotional.

The emotional aspect is “highly personalized”, so essentially it’s possible that you fear certain things (like the idea of going after and obtaining life long goals) because you’ve trained your mind (subconsciously) to behave this way.

And since you were able to train your mind to behave this way, it’s possible that you can also learn to train your mind (consciously) to think the opposite wayas well.

F the BS – It’s time to Rewire your thoughts and feelings about Fear.

The brain is a fascinating thing. It’s something that I’ve always had a deep curiosity and interest in. A while back I read a book about it, and the findings within were mind-blowing!

Without getting too technical (stay with me here), for generations the brain was always thought to be “fixed” in adults. That once you reached a certain age, your brain ceased in creating new neurological pathways.

But over the last few decades this theory has been proven false.

Through the power of Neural Plasticity (also sometimes referred to as neuroplasticity), which is defined as the ability of the brain to form and reorganize synaptic connections, especially in response to learning or experience, you can literally rewire your brain to your benefit.

Since your brain is dynamically changing throughout your day to day experiences and thinking, with a bit of hard work (nothing is worthy without it!) you can learn to eliminate fear and no longer allow it to be a set-back from achieving your goals . You can truly build the confidence needed to reach for the stars and go after whatever it is that you’ve always wanted.

Take the plunge. Make absolutely sure that you have a story to tell your children/grandchildren one day.

The Positive Impact of Negative Visualization

Achieve Limitless Success, Happiness and Gratitude

Zero BS on taking Control of your Life. No spam.

In life, shit happens.

One moment things are going well and you feel like you’re in a great place in your life and then BOOM, you’re hit with a curveball you never anticipated coming.

You’re in shock, emotions scatter all over the place and you think to yourself how could this have happened?!

It happens to all of us and while it certainly sucks and can make you want to reevaluate your entire existence, there’s a practice that can be performed to better prepare for the unavoidable that can help soften the sting just a bit.

Enter Negative Visualization.

This practice has been utilized by humans for thousands of years. Simply put, it’s a process of thinking about negative scenarios that could happen in your life at any given moment (anything ranging from the extreme such as the sudden passing of someone close to you or a freak accident that prevents you or a loved one from being able to take care of themselves, to something that may be a long time fear such as losing your job or having to deal with a long term break-up).

Essentially, you spend time thinking about what you have and what you’re grateful for and then you try to visualize your life without it.

At first the idea of negative visualization threw me off a bit. Being more or less an eternal optimist, the concept of spending time thinking about worst case scenarios (or even just negative thoughts in general for any period of time) was not something that I felt comfortable taking part in.

But as I continued to read about the topic, the positive impact that it could have became more clear. So I gave it a shot, and the results were astonishing.

By thinking about potential negative outcomes that technically could happen at any given time or day to either myself or to those that I love, I immediately felt a tremendous sense of appreciation and gratitude for the present moment and those around me.

It was clear that not unlike many others, I was taking various aspects of my life for granted.

Over a short period of time of practicing negative visualization, the value that I had subconsciously placed on myself, my life and those around me began to increase exponentially.

I started to bring realistic life outcomes to the surface level of my thinking, which allowed me to play out in my head how certain situations could arise, how I would potentially react to them and how I could begin mentally preparing for them.

For those that take a more pessimistic view of life, this practice could help break down the walls of fear that’ve been building up for decades. The potential discovery of realizing that certain things in your life aren’t as bad or could end up not being as bad as you might’ve made them out to be can be truly liberating.

Through negative visualization, it’s even possible to learn how to foresee and completely avoid certain situations that life may throw at us as well.

So when should you practice negative visualization?

Similar to reflecting, you should allocate a couple of minutes for this exercise. But for it to really work its wonders, you should practice this a couple of times per week when you have a few moments to yourself (it could really be performed anywhere).

Anticipate

By learning to anticipate, you can become more mentally prepared in dealing with the catastrophes that life will throw your way. The sudden extremes that can come with living are never going to be easy, but with this tool in your arsenal and the power of anticipation you won’t be as caught off guard and you’ll be able to handle circumstances just a little better.

On a more positive note, it can help with appreciating life and learning to be more grateful and thankful for everyone and everything around you.

How Reflecting Can Elevate Your Life to the Next Level

Achieve Limitless Success, Happiness and Gratitude

Zero BS on taking Control of your Life. No spam.

Social media paired with the evolution of cell phones has significantly hindered our ability to live in the present moment. It’s made it near impossible to simply just take a few moments out of our day to sit with our own thoughts.

When was the last time you were bored, like really bored? Remember what it was like (anybody born before the mid 90s) to actually be bored?!?

The average attention span of an adult in today’s society (per a few different articles that I came across) is around 8 seconds. Apparently a goldfish has a longer attention span (around 9 seconds) than us these days.

Over the years there’s been a wave of different apps that have come out, as well as more content focusing on improving your life and mental focus through activities such as yoga, guided meditation, brain games and so on.

But do these methods really work?

Have you ever really stuck with a meditation app for more than a few weeks (if that) consistently?

More likely than not, the answer for the large majority of people is no.

Luckily, there’s a better way (although, I am a huge proponent of yoga, meditation and brain games :D)

Enter the secret power of reflection.

Through reflection you can gain all that you may be seeking. From reducing stress, feeling more fulfilled and being more appreciative of your life, to increasing your ability to focus while simultaneously coming to a realization on what’s most important in the present for yourself as well as in the very near future.

F THE BS: It’s time to elevate your life to the next level

So how does it work?

There’s no one size fits all approach to tapping into your reflecting potential. Personally, I would say once a week, maybe even once every other week, I intentionally set aside time to do nothing more than sit alone in a calm environment with just my thoughts.

Quick and obvious disclaimer: Just like anything worth doing/having in life, if you don’t allocate the time necessary to reflect, or don’t make a serious and conscious effort to incorporate the exercise into your habits, you’ll never get the chance to enjoy the incredible impact that it could have on your life.

The amount of time you spend doing this is totally up to you. You can always start small and grow from there. Heck, sometimes my most profound discoveries come to me within the first few moments of reflecting.

So what really happens when you reflect?

Taking the time to just sit with your thoughts is a major accomplishment that you should be very proud of implementing into your life (remember our friend the goldfish who’s attention span beats ours?).

When you sit quietly with your thoughts (relaxing your facial features as well as your shoulders and the rest of your body), without judging them, you begin to open the eye of your mind. Similar to when you shower or the few minutes before you fall asleep (the moments when social media and your phone are not in use, ironic or not?) thoughts on top of thoughts fill your head. It’s like a never ending train track that’s paved with one thought after the other, sometimes related to stress while other times completely random.

If you can endure this initial phase when reflecting, and take a step back in your mind from “being” these thoughts and instead begin to “watch” them, your trail of thought will start to slow down. You’ll be able to begin seeing the forest for the trees.

When you achieve this state of mind (it’s not that hard, it just takes a little bit of practice, persistence and consistency), you’ll discover and connect certain dots together that you might’ve never connected before (or even come up with the idea or thought of connecting).

I cannot stress enough how vital this tool has been for me throughout the last few years of my life. It’s a groundbreaking and revolutionary strategy (at least it has been for me!) that can take you deep into your subconscious mind and allow you to extract thoughts, memories, feelings, emotions, experiences, and ideas and bring them to the surface, to your conscious state.

With this newfound ability you’ll inevitably gain invaluable insights that will elevate and accentuate your life for the better, while organically discovering ways to see and handle all of life’s situations more clearly.

How to SLOW DOWN and Take Control in Today’s Busy World

Achieve Limitless Success, Happiness and Gratitude

Zero BS on taking Control of your Life. No spam.

Have you ever been so deep in thought that you end up completely forgetting what you were just thinking about? Then, in an attempt to remember what you were pondering over, you try to backtrack your way through the web of thoughts to come back to your original idea?

For the average person, our mind (a lot of the time subconsciously) rules our day. It’s an everlasting machine being run 24/7, a thought producing engine without an OFF switch.

It’s said (from the internet, so take it with a grain of salt) that we have up to 50,000 thoughts per day. FIFTY THOUSAND. From that amount, an overly large percentage are said to be the same thoughts as we had the day before.

Why are we thinking so much, and better yet, why so quickly?

Over the years I’ve dabbled into mindfulness meditation, which is pretty much defined as a process of being consciously aware of the experiences occurring within the present moment.

Meditation is a technique that can take a lifetime to really master (maybe a few lifetimes!). What I’ve learned and discovered through this mental state (and I’m by no means an expert) is that your inner self can take a step back from your mind and watch your chain of thoughts come and go as they please without any judgement.

It’s sad to think, but most people don’t ever take the time to sit back and realize their thought processes.

They go about their day thinking and reacting to the beat of how their mind decides to play it’s own drum.

They don’t realize that they themselves are actually totally separate from their own mind.

They allow their mind to be in control, rather than being in control of their mind.

The brain is a fascinating thing when you really think about it, and in a way it’s almost impossible to wrap our heads around It (no pun intended!).

But all kidding aside, what if I told you that you could take control of your thoughts and reactions and slow down the number of thoughts (mostly repeated thoughts) that your mind machine produces on a daily basis?

How much calmer and more relaxed do you think your day would be if you were able to cut the amount of thoughts you have each day in half, or be able to not react as strongly and emotional to certain situations as they arise out of the blue?

The concept and strategy is quite simple.

1 – The next time you feel like your thoughts are racing through your head in high gear, notice the way your body feels. More likely than not, you’re tense. Relax your facial expressions and your shoulders (how you feel externally can really help to match how you feel internally). Maybe even put on a smile.

2 – Take a few deep breaths, breathing in through your nose and out through your mouth.

3 – Now try to sit back (inside your own head) and watch your thoughts flow, just how you’d watch waves at the beach rise and fall. Don’t judge them or be hard on yourself, just let them be and exist.

4 – Repeat this process each and every time you feel overwhelmed or strong emotions come about.

Over time, if practiced diligently, you will start to recognize your own thinking patterns, as well as pinpoint what events trigger certain reactions. You’ll begin to tap into the methods of how your mind machine operates and slowly be able to take over the reins of how you think and react to all situations.

With these few basic strategies in your arsenal, you’ll be able to take control of your mind and direct it to do as you say so, not the other way around.

“A mind that is fast is sick. A mind that is slow is sound. A mind that is still is divine.” – Meher Baba
